Looks like the fail was in the proprietary design first, X could have been a common standard, "but" proprietary interests prevented so. The design of an OS "and" an "optional" desktop was way cleaner, in this sense OS2 and windows were a step backwards versus Cuncurrent DOS with DesQView/X.

At this point, IMHO, there is no more need of a desktop, the skeleton is the hypervisor, the desktop in each single image can be just a framework serving a browser, the console can run in frame-buffer mode with a graphic full screen browser, all the rest is useless overhead, and complexity at the square which eloquently explains MTBF and defects rate. Even MS introducing core, should tell something.

Looking at it under this angle, the systemlets are some of many categories of images, so anybody can chose whatever he wish, and in this case the integrity is guaranteed at several layers, hypervisor, ghosting, eventually systemlets for the ones that care less of full OSs and want to enjoy the performance.
