Maybe Mono can be an alternative, although their vb.net support is equivalent to vb.net 8 and .NET 2 Runtime (Mono have much better support for C#) you can continue reusing your .net experience, in an OpenSouce Platform. MonoDevelop is a great IDE in Linux, and exist Visual Studio Support for Mono.
