Christian, I believe you are on the road to riches. Keep it up!
Nanda, I believe you are gravely mistaken. Drupal has no commercial plug in offering. All modules are found only at drupal.org/project/modules and are licensed GPL V2 just like Drupal Core. Fans of Drupal do not open stores where we sell our personal modules. Rather we all contribute and collaborate together in the open space.

But back to the point.
I have enjoyed tremendous success Training, Consulting, Developing, and supporting the OSS platform of Drupal. I didn't know I was heading down this road, but I kept getting invites to come speak at the many FREE gatherings that the Drupal community puts on each year. Soon, I was being invited to some of the PAID events where I also received payment.
From there it was an easy walk into a fulltime Training and Consultancy business.
M Y A D V I C E :
Pick your OSS product. STUDY STUDY STUDY. Get to know it VERY WELL. Attend any conferences you can. Read the books! Offer to SPEAK at as many as you can even if it costs you a little to get there. Start a local group. Do something for charity and tell the world about it. BLOG and TWEET and make lots of noise about your OSS project.
If you are VISIBLE then people will SEE you and if they SEE value in you they will BUY your time! This is EXACTLY what I did and now, in a couple weeks, I fly to Langley Air Force base to train 15 NASA IT members about Drupal site building and module development.
All this with no college degree; just a passion for what I believe is an amazing, flexible, powerful platform that is capable of changing the way organizations think about publishing their content and maintaining their data.
