It is necessary how Javascript really does that, what objects are instantiated when making ajax calls and how these calls are different in different browsers. For example, in IE, its an ActiveX call, in Mozilla/Safari browsers its a XMLHttpRequest call. So you need to understand these internals first before jumping into jQuery. jQuery makes Javasript pretty, but that is not necessarily a starting point for understanding some of the core stuff of how Ajax works.
